Synaptics Inc. a developer of electronic – human interface solutions, specifically touch screens and panels, issued a press release on September 5 detailing a new innovative characteristic of the Nokia Lumina 920 and 820 phones, which will officially launch November 2 with AT&T.  The Lumina 920 and 820 are Nokia’s newest smartphone entrant complete featuring the Windows Phone 8 operating system.

According to Synaptics, the Nokia Lumina smartphones will be the first implementation of the new advance multi-touch ClearPad capacitive touchscreen. This innovation makes it possible for those wearing gloves or those with long finger nails to operate the phone normally without having to remove the gloves or oddly position their fingers on the screen. The ClearPad technology optimizes the touch screen in a way that allows it to instantly detect the input, whether it is skin, glove or nail allowing for a more seamless experience.

“With Synaptics’ continuous innovation on touch, we are able to pioneer new technologies that improve the smartphone user experience,” said Kevin Shields, senior vice president, Smart Devices, Nokia. “Nokia has been a leader in display technology, and we are setting a new standard with Super Sensitive Touch technology on the Nokia Lumina 920 and Nokia Lumina 820.”

Bloomberg Businessweek reported on September 5 the Nokia New York unveiling of the Lumina 920 and 820 smartphones, a preview of the official November 2 launch.

According to Bloomberg, the Lumina 920 is equipped with a camera that has lenses that shift to provide compensation for unsteady hands. The result is sharper images in low light and smoother motion video captures. Charging the 920 requires only that it be placed on a wireless charging pod. Nokia Corp. also introduced the lesser expensive Lumina 820. Although the 820 is not  equipped with the special camera, it comes with an interchangeable back that allows the user to change the color of the phone.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was quoted for the article indicating that, “in selected markets,” the new phones would go on sale in the fourth quarter.

Reuters reported on September 6 that Nokia has drastically slashed the prices for its older model smartphones that employ the Windows Phone software. Nokia is cutting the price on the mid-range Lumina 800 smartphone by 15% this week, and will be making similar cuts to other Windows-equipped phones soon.

The price cut from other older model Lumina phones has not been revealed. The company’s price cutting falls on the heels of news those Nokia’s stock prices continue to drop. According to Reuters, Nokia has hopes that the new model phones will regain some of the market share lost since committing to the Microsoft software. Nokia has reported a $3.78 billion loss over the past 18 months and has had to eliminate 10,000 jobs.
